Introduction

Daily devotions deliver a moment of calm, reflection, and Scripture right to your subscribers’ inboxes — every single day. In this guide, you’ll set up a daily devotion email using Klaviyo for your template/content and Cadence to schedule the recurring campaign to free up your time for more important work.

Step 1: Define your daily devotion strategy

Audience: new believers, longtime readers, or your church/ministry list
Format: Scripture → short reflection → simple prayer → optional “act” (one small next step)
Length: 200–350 words works well for daily reading
Metrics: opens, clicks (to full reading), list growth, unsubscribe rate

Step 2: Prepare your devotion content feed for Klaviyo

In Google Sheets, create a sheet with one row per date. Include at least a date column. For this example, add columns: date, scripture_reference, subject_line, scripture_text, reflection,prayer, and image_url.

Publish the sheet as CSV: File > Share > Publish to the web > CSV. Copy the CSV URL.
In Napkin.io, clone this function: Add to your Functions.
In Other > Environment Variables, set GOOGLE_SHEETS_URL to your CSV URL.
Deploy the function. Open the function URL in a browser and confirm it returns today’s row as JSON.

We recommend creating a backlog of ~30 rows of devotions so that you have plenty of headroom here!

Create Klaviyo Web Feed

In Klaviyo, go to Settings > Other > Web Feeds, then click Add web feed.
Name the feed, for example DailyDevotions. Paste the Napkin function URL. Leave Request method and Content type as default.

Step 3: Build your email template in Klaviyo

Go to Templates → Create → Email
Include these sections:
- Header/logo
- Greeting (e.g., “Good morning, {{ first_name|default:'Friend' }}”)
- Scripture (bold the reference)
- Reflection (1–2 short paragraphs)
- Prayer (italicized)
- Optional “Act” CTA (one clear, simple action)
- Footer with preferences/unsubscribe

Refer to feed fields like so:

Make sure to use "Preview & Test" to confirm everything looks correct!

Step 4: Schedule the recurring campaign in Cadence

You’ll use Cadence to automate the daily send. This way you just need to focus on the content, and Cadence does the heavy-lifting on sending the email each day to the right people at the right time.

Setup: Give it a clear name (e.g. "Daily Devotions") and select the audience list or segment.
Content: Select the Klaviyo template you created in Step 3. Add a compelling subject line, ideally from your feed.
Schedule: Choose Daily as your frequency, and pick a time that fits your readers' habits. 8:00 AM ET is a strong starting point.
NOTE: If you wanted to send regular, but less frequent devotions, you could use a less frequent cadence.
Review: Create a Klaviyo preview campaign. Then click Create recurring campaign.

That’s it! Cadence will handle the day‑to‑day sending. Your Daily Devotion series is live.

Step 5: Grow your list

To grow your list, start by creating a simple, focused landing page that invites visitors to “Get a short daily devotion in your inbox.” You can pair this with a pop-up form built in Klaviyo to capture new signups right on your site—ideally promising that the first devotion will arrive within 24 hours.

Consider offering a lead magnet to boost conversions, such as a free 7-day PDF sampler of your most-loved devotions. On the same page, include a few lines of social proof—brief testimonials or quotes from current readers who look forward to the daily messages. Finally, add a small referral nudge at the end of each email, encouraging readers to “Forward to a friend who’d appreciate today’s message.”

Step 6: Measure, learn, and improve

To keep your series improving over time, make it a habit to review your results regularly.

Once a week, check key engagement metrics like open rates, click-throughs, and unsubscribes to get a quick pulse on how your readers are responding.

Once a month, take a deeper look at your data. Identify your top-performing subject lines and track your overall list growth to see which messages truly resonate. This is also the perfect time to experiment with subject lines or send time to see what works best for your audience.
